Sarasota Urban ReForestation

The Sarasota Urban ReForestation project was started by the Florida Veterans for Common Sense Fund here in Sarasota to advocate for environmental change. We started our first microforest project at the Celery Fields located in Sarasota, Florida. Our goal is to make simple and sustainable changes that will serve the community and our planet into the future. SURF has plans to continue creating microforests and supporting other environmental projects in the future. Our efforts will help to combat the global climate crisis and educate our community on how we can help nurture the environment.

The Florida Veterans for Common Sense Fund is an organization that is dedicated to supporting former military members. The group does this by serving the needs of veterans and their families as they face new challenges. The fund also contributes in community activities to create a more supportive and patriotic society. They were the creators of the idea of microforests and hope to accomplish them throughout Florida.

The Suncoast Science Center has involved student volunteers with SURF’s mission, teaching them real life professional skills. During the 2021 summer, the Suncoast Science Center student volunteers worked with SURF to create the microforest at Nathan Benderson Park. As part of their involvement, they contributed in designing the forest, raising awareness for it, and creating this website.
